The nearest large city to Maison Caprera and popular with tourists is Bergerac, only a 25 minute drive away. Featuring in many ‘new life in the sun’ tv programs, Bergerac offers a combination of old and new. The historic old town positioned alongside the Dordogne River holds many half-timbered architectural treats and car-free, shop and café-lined walkways. There’s no shortage of places to eat and drink, catering for high-end dining to chocolatiers. There are many small retail shops within the centre and plenty of the very large retail units on the outskirts.
Bergerac is a great place to spend the day or a few hours just perusing through the narrow streets, stopping for a coffee, and people watching. If you take a cruise on one of the traditional barges, which formerly transported wine, up and down the Dordogne River you will get a sense of the history of the city from a different perspective and they are usually very enjoyable.
Wednesday or Saturday are market days and between 7am to 1pm you will see stalls full of wonderful local and regional farmers produce, of excellent quality.

Bergerac is classified as a city of art and history and is the second largest city in the Dordogne department, Périgueux being the largest. Impressive scale wall art can be seen on some buildings, and there are many sculptures in the city and art galleries to visit.
