Bergerac old town decorated for summer
Street art in Bergerac

The nearest large city to Maison Caprera and popular with tourists is Bergerac, only a 25 minute drive away. Featuring in many ‘new life in the sun’ tv programs, Bergerac offers a combination of old and new. The historic old town positioned alongside the Dordogne River holds many half-timbered architectural treats and car-free, shop and café-lined walkways. There’s no shortage of places to eat and drink, catering for high-end dining to chocolatiers. There are many small retail shops within the centre and plenty of the very large retail units on the outskirts.

Bergerac is a great place to spend the day or a few hours just perusing through the narrow streets, stopping for a coffee, and people watching. If you take a cruise on one of the traditional barges, which formerly transported wine, up and down the Dordogne River you will get a sense of the history of the city from a different perspective and they are usually very enjoyable.

Wednesday or Saturday are market days and between 7am to 1pm you will see stalls full of wonderful local and regional farmers produce, of excellent quality.

Bergerac is full of sculpture and street art

Bergerac is classified as a city of art and history and is the second largest city in the Dordogne department, Périgueux being the largest. Impressive scale wall art can be seen on some buildings, and there are many sculptures in the city and art galleries to visit.

Restaurants we’ve tried in Bergerac and can recommend for different occasions and budgets:

L’imparfait Restaurant situated in the old quarter offers al fresco or inside fine dining at a price, but you get what you pay for. Good choice for a celebration or if you are budget free and love quality food and wine.

We are regulars at Villa Laetitia Restaurant in the summer when we can sit in their al fresco, very welcome, shaded courtyard area. The restaurant is family run, open all year round and to-date we’ve always been served quality dishes at a very reasonable price. Villa Laetitia offers all round good value and it is positioned slightly away from the crowds and summer only tourist pop-up restaurants which is a bonus.

For a great view across the river to Bergerac we can recommend the very popular Le Bistro Enface. You will need to book a long way in advance to get a booking or if you are lucky you may get a last minute cancellation. The food is really top notch and highly recommended. Park across the bridge (to the right on the roundabout) and walk back over to access the restaurant.

If you have a large group or a family with children and you like Asian food and value for money, we can recommend Tan Phat on the outskirts of Bergerac. It’s an Asian all-you-can-eat buffet style restaurant for 23€ per adult in the evening and 16.50€ for lunch. Children under 10 from 7€ to 9€. Smaller serving platters than other similar venues mean that the food is replenished regularly with fresh dishes – great choice, tasty food and fab value. Very popular with French families of all ages – we recommend you arrive for 7pm if eating in the evening, it fills up quickly.
