Our list of recommended places to visit in the Dordogne
Places we can recommend to visit nearby with children:
- Chateau Bridoire – historical chateau with plenty of traditional games to play. chateaudebridoire.com
- Bergerac Carting – check opening hours. bergerac-karting.com
- Zoo Mescoules – zoo-de-mescoules.com
- Donkey Sanctuary – heehaws.fr by appointment only
- Canoe Lac de l’escourou – pro-sports-24.com/canoe-lescourou.html – 10 minutes away from Eymet – enjoy canoeing on the large expanse of water that makes up the reservoir/nature reserve – great for bird spotting.
- Canoë Allemands du Dropt – only a 10 minute drive away and fairly quiet if you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of canoeing along a gentle
river.
Places further afield we can recommend for any age group:
- Chateau Duras – chateau-de-duras.com
Lovely historic chateau with lots going on in high season. - Issigeac – very pretty medieval village known for its Sunday morning market, but get there early (before 9.30am) it gets extremely busy in high season
- Monpazier – beautiful bastide town with lots of good browsing shops and places to eat
- La Roque Gageac – lots to do and explore in this area- very picturesque. We
recommend taking a picnic and hiring a canoe from this spot. There are spots along the river Dordogne where you can pull up the canoe to enjoy your picnic and take a dip in the river. View all the historic chateaux from the valley floor while canoeing along the river. We would recommend the 3 hour option if you are not used to canoeing or the heat. Beware it does get very busy in high season – be early! - Beynac – chateau-beynac.com – a bit of a climb so not for the faint hearted, particularly when it’s hot, but it is worth it if you love history. Get there early before the crowds and heat to make the most of it.
- Limeuil – where the River Vizere meets the Dordogne – great for exploring – lots of arty shops, places to eat or take a picnic and eat by the picturesque river bridge while the kids have fun in the water. You can hire canoes from here too. See our blog post ‘At your leisure Limeuil style’
- Les Jardins de Marqueyssac – marqueyssac.com
Beautiful sculptural garden overlooking the stunning Dordogne Valley, great for al the family and good quality café for lunch or drinks with cake. See our blog post ‘Canoes and topiary in the Dordogne Valley’
